Analysts See 79 Billion Cubic-Foot Withdrawal in U.S. Natural-Gas Inventories

U.S. government data due Thursday are likely to show stockpiles of natural gas last week declined much less than the average decline for this time of year, which would bring storage totals bearishly closer to the five-year average.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration is expected to report storage levels fell by 79 billion cubic feet of gas during the week ended Jan. 11, according to the average forecast of 11 analysts, brokers and traders surveyed by The Wall Street Journal.

The estimates range from declines of 55 bcf to 92 bcf. The average forecast of 79 bcf would compare with a 208 bcf withdrawal from storage in the same week last year and a five-year average decline of 218 bcf for that week, according to data from Energy Management Institute.
