Japex aims to launch LNG bunkering at Tomakomai, Hokkaido in future

Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. is collaborating with a local port authority to potentially launch the first LNG bunkering infrastructure in Hokkaido, northern Japan, in the coming years, a Japex official said Tuesday.

Japex, which produces and supplies crude oil and natural gas in Hokkaido, will set up a study group with the Tomakomai Port Authority at the end of February for this purpose, Japex said in a statement.

The study group, led by Japex, will not only include government and local authorities but also companies in the private sector including Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, it said, adding that the partners will compile a report of their findings in the next one year after conducting six rounds of meetings, the Japex official said.

In the meetings, they will discuss, among other things, the potential for launching LNG bunkering at Tomakomai, which could be used en route to North America, as well as China and South Korea, Japex said.

The thrust of LNG forms part of Japex's mid-term growth strategy.
