U.S. Oil Inventories Fall as Gasoline Stockpiles Rise
U.S. inventories of crude oil declined last week, but gasoline and other fuel stockpiles surged surprisingly higher, according to data released Wednesday by the Energy Information Administration.
Crude-oil stockpiles declined by 3.1 million barrels to 455.9 million barrels, and remain about 4% above the five-year average for this time of year, the EIA said. Analysts surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had predicted crude stockpiles would fall by 3.6 million barrels from the prior week.
Gasoline stockpiles unexpectedly increased by 3.6 million barrels to 232.8 million barrels, while analysts in the survey were expecting levels to fall by 2.4 million barrels from the previous week.
Distillate stocks, which include heating oil and diesel fuel increased by 5.7 million barrels to 136.2 million barrels, and are now just 2% below the five-year average for this time of year, the EIA said. Earlier in the week, analysts had forecast supplies would increase by just 400,000 barrels from the previous week.
