India's Sep spot naphtha exports seen set to fall from Aug on refinery shutdown

India's spot naphtha exports loading in September are set to decrease from August as planned and unplanned refinery shutdowns crimp supply, market sources said this week.

Indian refiners have sold at least 265,500 mt of spot naphtha for September loading to date, down sharply from the 634,000 mt sold for August loading, according to a tally by S&P Global Platts based on public tenders.

"I think September cargoes will be reduced as some refineries are having trouble," a trader in Singapore said. "I can see them importing gasoil and gasoline from some tenders," he added.

A second trader said one Indian refiner was facing "problems on the pipe system due to landslides" and also attributed the lower exports to turnarounds at state-owned refineries.

State-owned oil refiner Hindustan Petroleum Corporation plans to shut some secondary units at its 8.3 million mt/year Vizag refinery in September-October as part of an upgrading plan to produce Euro 6 fuels from next April. The facilities that will be idled include gasoline units and one of two diesel units, S&P Global Platts reported earlier.

State-controlled oil refiner Indian Oil Corp. has shut its 6 million mt/year Barauni refinery for a full scheduled turnaround that is expected to be completed by mid-September.

In addition, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd has shut one of its three crude distillation units as a precautionary measure after a landslide caused by heavy rain. The affected CDU has a capacity of 60,000 b/d. The unaffected Phase I and Phase II of the refinery complex have a combined CDU capacity of 240,000 b/d.
