Baker Hughes: Canada drops 28 rigs for the week

Canada has dropped 28 rigs for the week ended Mar. 13, according to Baker Hughes data. With 175 rigs running, the count is 14 more than were drilling in Canada a year ago. The number of oil-directed rigs in Canada decreased by 19, bringing the count to 115 rigs for the week. Gas-directed rigs decreased by 9 units to 60.

The US drilling rig count, meanwhile, dropped a single rig to 792 rigs running for the week. The count is down 232 units from the 1,026 rigs working this time a year ago.

At 771 rigs working, there were 3 more units drilling on land week-over-week. The number of offshore units decreased by 4 units to 19. The number of rigs drilling in inland waters remained unchanged at 2 rigs working for the week.

US oil-directed rigs increased by 1 unit from last week to 683 units working, down from the 833 rigs drilling for oil this week a year ago. Gas-directed rigs were down 2 units to 107, and down from the 193 units drilling for gas a year ago.

Among the major oil and gas-producing states, Texas saw the largest increase in rigs with a 4-unit gain to reach 408. West Virginia is up 2 units to reach 15. New Mexico is up a single rig to reach 117 rigs working for the week.

Seven states were unchanged this week: North Dakota, 51; Oklahoma, 46; Pennsylvania, 24; Colorado, 21; California, 12; Alaska, 10; and Utah, 7.

Louisiana dropped 5 rigs to reach 47 units this week. Ohio is down 2 units to 9 for the week. Wyoming dropped a single rig to reach 20 rigs drilling for the week.
