Canadian, US Crude Trade At Smallest Gap In a Decade

The difference between US and Canadian crude prices are at the lowest level since March 2009, according to RBC Capital Markets, a symptom of the Alberta government mandated production cuts that were directed in December. Since then, Canadian prices have surged 39% to more than $44 a barrel. The recent narrowing differential is a reversal from when the two benchmarks traded at a record wide gap in October of more than $51 a barrel. Limited pipeline capacity has weighed on Canadian heavy crude prices over the past year. But the initiative to limit production has sent prices higher, in part because of declining inventories as well as traders covering short positions on physical crude barrels. However, some analysts said the gains could be short lived since the pipeline bottlenecks remain.
